Adams Criticises Hodgson For Poor Decisions
Former Arsenal defender Tony Adams has criticised Roy Hodgson for not taking experienced players like John Terry and Ashley Cole to the World Cup 2014. Hodgson appeared to favour youth for this tournament, as he took the likes of Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw on the plane to Brazil. This meant that there was no place for Ashley Cole in the squad, while Hodgson did not also consider persuading John Terry to return from international retirement. The lack of experience proved vital at the World Cup, as England failed to create any impression.
They suffered two defeats in the opening two matches while they could only manage a disappointing 0-0 draw in the final group match. After finishing bottom of the table, England have returned home. Even though there have been numerous failures since the 1966 World Cup victory, England were at least expected to reach the knockout stages. Failure to do so has resulted in a lot of pressure on Hodgson. Even though the English FA have confirmed that the former Liverpool and West Brom boss will be continuing in his position, his future still remains unclear.
Meanwhile, Adams has increased the pressure by suggesting that the lack of tactical nous coupled with a poor squad selection were the reasons for the early exit.
“I was surprised at the way England were set up in the tournament. So to be honest, it was not a surprise we are out because I was always concerned about the defence.
Everyone knows by now I think John Terry should have been out there. He is the best English central defender in the country. And I would have also taken Ashley Cole. His experience would have been vital and he could have handled seven games,” said the former Arsenal defender, who has little experience of management.
